Players can build themselves for high AC, sure, but you're seldom ever going to come across a whole party that does that, because it's very specific class/multiclass/race combos that can do it. Does AC get so high that you or the enemy can't reliably hit each other? Absolutely not. there's quite a few lower level creatures that are save or suck/save or die, they're just not often used because they require specific adventure design to really place them in an encounter. Is there an increase in save or suck abilities? Ehhhhh, not really. Is there a lot of healing on player side of things? Yes. You must have some questionable dungeon masters then, because I've played tier 3 and 4 characters multiple times, and have never once felt that to be the case. Maybe its just me, but deciding between a third magic missile or a grease was more fun than having 10 fireballs and another 10 in the moved up next slot and another 10 from delayed blast in the next slot and then the moved up slot and the next moved up slot. Some of the classic games did a really good job of high level play, with advanced classes / high level multi-classing and modified monsters and rules to keep it sort of under control but even those had 'party way, way too strong' problems (often coming down to dull fights until you found a boss, then 20-50 more dull fights, then a boss. Its all about the spell penetration and save throw luck and about as fun as playing 'war' card game. The game degenerates into 'who fails their save throw first and dies' in the very high levels, no one hits anyone anymore, AC / skills and HP /healing/etc too much to fool with it. Originally posted by jonnin:D&D is honestly at its best below level 10, IMHO. But you still can't go over 161000 XP until you start that campaign. With SOD installed the BG XP cap is 500000. This game is going to have a similar (or possibly higher) level cap to BG with expansions.Įdit: I forgot about Seige of Dragonspear. That translates to a level cap of 8-10 depending on class. Tales of the Sword Coast raised the XP cap to 161000 XP (where it is in the EE), but BG2 is a separate game not an expansion to BG. In many ways it was a step down from the SSI Darksun games. Some weapons didn't even have magical variants (clubs). The original BG had a 89000 XP cap (which you probably hit before your got to enter the city), no class kits, fewer base classes, no weapon styles, about 1/2 the spells that are in the EE. I think someone here didn't play the original BG. They need to keep true to Baldurs Gate and not try to save money and leaving us with only half a game. In original Baldurs Gate with all expansions you could reach level 40 with some classes and 31 with others.
